When does an oversize or overweight load need a pilot car or escort in Florida? Here are the width, height, length and weight thresholds that trigger an escort, a height pole, or a police escort.

Escort & pilot car requirements

  • Police / law-enforcement escortover 16 ft width

    Over 16 ft wide: 2 law enforcement escorts on state-maintained roadways; 1 LE + 1 qualified escort on limited-access during nighttime.

  • Police / law-enforcement escortover 16 ft height

    Height over 16 ft: 1 law enforcement escort required in addition to 1 qualified escort with vertical height indicator preceding the load.

  • Lead (front) pilot carover 14 ft width

    Over 14 ft up to 16 ft wide: 2 qualified escorts (1 front + 1 rear) required at all times, daytime only.

  • Chase (rear) pilot carover 14 ft width

    Over 14 ft up to 16 ft wide: 2 qualified escorts (1 front + 1 rear) required at all times, daytime only.

  • Pilot car (front or rear)over 12 ft width

    Over 12 ft up to 14 ft wide: 1 qualified escort. On 2-lane with pavement <24 ft: 1 front + 1 rear. Daytime only.

  • Height-pole escortover 14'6" height

    Over 14'6" up to 16 ft: 1 escort with vertical height indicator precedes the load.

  • Pilot car (front or rear)over 250 ft length

    Length over 250 ft: 1 law enforcement escort + 1 qualified escort required.

  • Pilot car (front or rear)over 150 ft length

    Length over 150 ft: 2 qualified escorts required (1 qualified suffices on limited access).

  • Pilot car (front or rear)over 95 ft length

    Length over 95 ft: 1 qualified escort required during all movement (except truck-tractor semi-trailers up to 105 ft).

Travel restrictions

  • Daylight-only travelover 12 ft width

    Over 12 ft wide: daytime hours only (1/2 hr before sunrise to 1/2 hr after sunset). Night allowed only with law enforcement escort (FAC 14-26.00425).

  • Weekend / holiday restrictionover 10 ft width

    No movement over 10 ft wide, 80 ft long, or 14'6" high on New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Friday after Thanksgiving, or Christmas.

Driver & inspection requirements

  • Certified escort driver requiredover 12 ft width

    Florida Qualified Pilot Car Escort certification required (FDOT P/EFT + NSC 8-hr Defensive Driving). Accepts AZ/CO/GA/MN/NC/OK/UT/VA/WA/WI.
