Get set up to run loads
Everything it takes to go from signing up to claiming your first load and getting paid — laid out step by step. It is free to browse and set up; AmberLight only ever takes a flat 5% out of your payout on completed jobs.
- A pilot vehicle you can photograph — front, both sides, and rear, flagged up and ready for a run.
- Your current Certificate of Insurance (COI) and Pilot Car certification, as a PDF or clear photo, each with a future expiry date.
- Any other credentials you hold — Driver’s License, Medical Card, High Pole, or Flagger certs.
- Your payout details for Stripe (see Step 5) — a bank account plus your SSN or, if you run as a business, your EIN.
Step 1: Create your account and pilot profile
Sign up as a pilot, then build your profile: your company or DBA, your home base, the states you serve, and your escort capabilities — Lead, Chase, High Pole, Steer, and Route Survey.
Your profile, badges, and ratings are how carriers discover you and decide to book you. See exactly what a carrier sees on the Find a pilot directory.
Step 2: Add your four vehicle photos — required before you can claim
Upload four photos of your pilot vehicle — front, both sides, and rear — flagged up and ready for a run. AmberLight verifies each one.
This is your first gate. You cannot claim a load until all four photos are verified. Once they pass, you earn the Vehicle Verified badge that carriers look for.
Tip — Shoot in good daylight with the whole vehicle in frame and your amber light and flags visible — it makes review faster and avoids a re-do.
Step 3: Upload your credentials and earn your badges
Add your documents to your vault. A current COI earns the Insured badge, and a current Pilot Car certification earns the Certified Pilot Carbadge — both need a future expiry date to stay active. You can also add your Driver’s License, Medical Card, High Pole, and Flagger certs.
Your documents stay private in your vault and are shared with a carrier only once you are booked on their load.
The five badges carriers can see:
- Insured— a current COI on file.
- Certified Pilot Car— a current pilot-car certification on file.
- Vehicle Verified— all four vehicle photos verified.
- Top Rated— a 4.5+ average across at least five rated jobs.
- Experienced— ten completed jobs.
Tip — Keep your expiry dates current. An expired COI drops the Insured badge automatically, and carriers can see when it is gone.
Step 4: Set your eligibility so the right loads find you
Fill in where and what you are cleared to run — your state PEVO eligibility, authorizations, qualifications, and equipment. AmberLight uses these to match you with loads you are actually a fit for, so you spend less time scrolling past jobs you cannot take.
Not sure what a given state requires? Check the requirements by state.
Step 5: Connect your payout account (Stripe)
Payouts run through Stripe. On your Payouts, tap Set up payoutsand Stripe walks you through a secure signup in its own window. AmberLight never sees your bank login or full tax ID — Stripe handles that directly.
Have these on hand so it goes quickly:
- Your legal name and date of birth.
- If you operate as an individual or sole proprietor, your Social Security Number (SSN). If you run as a business or LLC, your EIN and legal business name.
- Your home or business address, phone, and email.
- The bank account you want to be paid to — routing number and account number.
Stripe collects your tax info in the same step (your legal name and taxpayer ID — the W-9 equivalent), so there is no separate W-9 to upload. AmberLight files a 1099-K through Stripe when required.
Payout timing for new accounts. New Stripe accounts get a longer hold on the very first payouts — roughly seven days — while the account builds history. After that, later payouts land in about two business days, so your first is the slow one.
The full picture of how and when you get paid is in the Payment Terms. Stripe also has its own payouts and identity-verification help if you get stuck in its signup.
Tip — The name on your bank account should match your Stripe identity, or Stripe may hold the payout until it is resolved.
Step 6: Claim a load, run it, and get paid
Browse open loads — all of them, or just the ones near you — and claim a slot at the posted rate, or send the carrier a counter-offer. When you both e-sign the Rate Confirmation Agreement, the booking is official.
Run the job and mark it complete. The carrier’s payment is held from the moment they book, and it is released when the job’s done — as soon as the carrier confirms completion, when they release it, or automatically 72 hours after the job is marked complete.
Your payout is the escort rate minus AmberLight’s flat 5% service fee. Fuel surcharge and overnight charges pass through to you in full. See the exact math in the Payment Terms.
Tip — A polite counter-offer with a reason lands better than a silent pass — and remember carriers can see your reliability counters.
If you have to cancel
Things happen. If you cancel or no-show, the carrier is fully refunded and you pay no money penalty — but it is recorded on the public reliability counters carriers see on your profile. The simplest way to protect your reputation is to only claim what you can run.
