Deadhead

Miles a pilot car drives empty, without a load, to or from a job.

Deadhead is the distance a pilot car travels without escorting a load — typically getting to the load's start point or returning home afterward. Operators may bill deadhead at a reduced per-mile rate (around $0.50–0.75/mi), and it's often negotiable or waived when the loaded miles clearly exceed the empty miles.
