Colorado Pilot Car Requirements

Front overhang more than 15': one pilot escort travelling in the FRONT (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 411.1). Independent of overall length and of the route-colour width ladder.

Rear overhang more than 25': one pilot escort travelling in the REAR (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 411). Independent of overall length and of the route-colour width ladder.

NOT ESTABLISHED as a State Patrol mandate: 2 CCR 601-4 contains no CSP escort threshold. What the rule actually requires above the route-colour ceilings (13' blue, 15' yellow/green/white, 8'6" red, 17' absolute) is a CHAPTER 6 SPECIAL PERMIT, which is a permit class, not an escort. Any CSP involvement is set on the permit face — call CDOT.

Travel over 16'0" high is PROHIBITED unless a pilot escort vehicle is positioned in front with a height pole — 2 CCR 601-4 sec. 409.2, verbatim: "An Extra-legal Vehicle or Load more than sixteen feet in Height is prohibited from travel unless a Pilot Escort Vehicle is positioned in front with a height pole." The pole must have a non-conductive tip and be of non-destructive flexible material, must not extend more than 6 inches above the load, and compression fittings require a secondary means of securement (sec. 505.1.7). Over 17' a licensed signal contractor must accompany the load through signal-controlled intersections (sec. 409.4); over 17'6" a route survey is required (sec. 409.3).

Rear pilot escort. 2 CCR 601-4 sec. 410.3 requires one pilot in the REAR for length over 115' on four-lane highways; this entry fires 5' early on purpose. Rear overhang over 25' also requires a rear pilot (sec. 411.2), and front overhang over 15' a front pilot (sec. 411.1).

One pilot escort in the FRONT for overall length over 85' on MOUNTAINOUS two-lane highways — those marked with hash marks on the Pilot Escort and Oversize Restriction Map (2 CCR 601-4 secs. 410.1, 235). On non-mountainous two-lane the front pilot starts over 110' (sec. 410.2). Lowest binding trigger encoded; the map decides which applies.

ROUTE-COLOUR DEPENDENT. BLUE routes: over 11' up to 13' requires one pilot in the front AND one in the rear (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 408.2.2.2); over 13' needs a Chapter 6 Special permit. YELLOW: over 13' up to 15', front pilot plus either a rear pilot or a flashing yellow light. GREEN/WHITE: a rear pilot or a flashing yellow light at 13'/15' depending on lane count. Lowest binding trigger encoded — check the Pilot Escort and Oversize Restriction Map.

ROUTE-COLOUR DEPENDENT — carry CDOT's Pilot Escort and Oversize Restriction Map and read the route before you quote this. BLUE routes: "An Extra-legal Vehicle or Load that exceeds 8 feet 6 inches but does not exceed 11 feet in Width requires one Pilot Escort Vehicle in the front" (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 408.2.2.1) — i.e. a front pilot at the first inch of overwidth. YELLOW: front pilot over 11'. GREEN: front pilot over 13' on two-lane. WHITE: rear pilot or flashing light over 15'. RED: nothing over 8'6" without a Chapter 6 Special permit. The lowest binding trigger is encoded here so the data fails safe; on a green or white route the real trigger is higher.

Night travel over 14' wide is PROHIBITED unless authorized under a Chapter 6 Special permit (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 408.3.3). Between 12' and 14' at night: one pilot escort in the FRONT on two-lane highways, one in the REAR on four-lane (sec. 408.3.2). Up to 12', lighting only, no escort (sec. 408.3.1).

Narrower than a six-holiday blanket (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 404). An extra-legal load other than a Longer Vehicle Combination is prohibited from travel 6:00am-9:00pm on MEMORIAL DAY, INDEPENDENCE DAY and LABOR DAY, and noon-9:00pm on the Friday preceding Memorial Day and Labor Day, with Friday/Monday adjustments when Independence Day falls on a weekend (sec. 404.3). New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are NOT general closure days under sec. 404 — the previous entry over-restricted those three. Longer Vehicle Combinations are barred outright on the three holidays (sec. 404.1) but MAY travel on New Year's, Thanksgiving and Christmas (sec. 404.2). Cripple Creek-area limits apply 3:00-7:00pm on SH 24 and SH 67 on holiday weekends (sec. 404.4); travel is barred whenever a hazardous road condition exists (sec. 405).

Colorado requires CDOT-certified escort vehicle operators on any permitted move that needs a pilot escort — which on a blue route starts at the first inch over 8'6" (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 408.2.2.1). Certification is mandatory and the permit holder must inspect it to confirm it is valid and current (2 CCR 601-4 sec. 500.2). Requirements: 18 or older, valid licence in the state of residence, insurance of not less than $1,000,000 combined single limit naming pilot escort operation on the face of the document (sec. 500.4); a current 5-year MVR clear of drug/alcohol convictions and of any single 6-point moving violation (sec. 500.5); card carried at all times while escorting (sec. 500.6); initial certification valid 4 years with one 4-year recertification by mail or online (sec. 500.7). The reciprocity list formerly shown here (AZ, OK, UT, WA, NC, FL, VA, MN, GA) does NOT appear in Chapter 5 and has been removed as unverified — confirm acceptance of an out-of-state card with CDOT before relying on it.
