Vermont Pilot Car Requirements

Overhang of 15' or greater (FRONT OR REAR): 1 escort required — "Escort vehicles are required when the vehicle and/or load meet or exceed the following dimensions ... Overhang of fifteen feet (15') or greater." VT states this with no directional qualifier, so a 15' FRONT overhang also triggers it; this entry is keyed to rear overhang only and will not fire on a front overhang. Length 80' or greater: 1 escort required — "Escort vehicles are required when the vehicle and/or load meet or exceed the following dimensions ... Long load of eighty feet (80') or greater." (CVO-110 rev. 07/2022, ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS.)

Width 12' or greater: 1 escort required — "Wide load of twelve feet (12') or greater." PLACEMENT CORRECTED 2026-09-14: VT keys on DIVIDED vs UNDIVIDED, not interstate vs non-interstate — "When one escort is required, it shall precede a load on undivided highways and follow the load on divided highways." Vermont has divided NON-interstate arterials (US 7, parts of US 4) where the old wording told the operator to lead when the rule says follow. (CVO-110 rev. 07/2022.)

CORRECTED 2026-09-14 — the previous text ("Travel Mon-Fri daylight hours only for loads requiring escorts") was wrong on three counts: the trigger is not escort-linked, Mon-Fri is a SEPARATE rule, and the window is not literal daylight. Verbatim: "Travel with vehicles and/or loads which are over width or overlength or over height shall be restricted to daylight hours and movement shall be made between thirty (30) minutes before sunrise to thirty (30) minutes after sunset. Vehicles, which are overweight only and are capable of traveling with the traffic flow, are not restricted to daylight travel time." WARNING — this entry is keyed to 12' width, but a 9'0" load is over width in Vermont and is daylight-restricted; this rule emits nothing until 12'1". (CVO-110 rev. 07/2022.)

Sat/Sun/holiday travel available only if the load is 12' or narrower, 100' or shorter, and 108,000 lb or lighter; heavier/wider/longer loads are restricted to weekdays. Scoped "On state highways unless otherwise stated." VT's holiday list is only SIX days — New Year's, Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
