Washington Pilot Car Requirements

Width over 20': "Two pilot/escort vehicles are required on multilane UNDIVIDED highways, one in front and one at the rear" (WAC 468-38-100(1)(c)). CORRECTED 2026-09-14 — the previous text said "4+-lane divided", which had divided/undivided backwards. The rear escort required over 14' under (1)(b) remains in force. NOTE the (1)(a) two-lane rule (front AND rear above 11') also remains in force and is not superseded here; because it shares this rule's dedup key, a load over 20' is shown this message instead of the 11' one.

CORRECTED 2026-09-14 — this measures TRAILER length including load, not overall combination length; and the claim that "superload classification applies at this threshold" appears nowhere in 468-38-100 and was removed. Width over 14': "One escort vehicle is required at the rear on multilane highways" (WAC 468-38-100(1)(b)). CORRECTED 2026-09-14 — the rule says "multilane", with no divided/undivided qualifier, and it does NOT stop at 20': above 20' subsection (1)(c) ADDS a front escort on multilane undivided highways and this rear escort remains.

Width over 11': "Two pilot/escort vehicles are required on two lane highways, one in front and one at the rear" (WAC 468-38-100(1)(a)). 11' is the PUBLISHED trigger, not a conservative guess — Washington's first escort comes a full foot before the 12' most states use.

Loads outside the nighttime envelope require the permit notation "Night movement approved" — "A vehicle or vehicle combination that does not exceed a defined envelope of twelve feet wide, fourteen feet six inches high and an overall combined length of one hundred five feet is exempt from the restriction on movement at night" (WAC 468-38-075(3); see also 468-38-175(3)). Commuter curfew applies in the Seattle-Everett, Tacoma, Olympia and Vancouver corridors. SCOPE WARNING: the envelope is THREE-dimensional (12'W AND 14'6"H AND 105'L) but this entry gates on width alone, so a 10'-wide 15'-high load falls outside the envelope and still emits nothing here.

Washington requires escort-operator certification: 8-hour initial course, 4-hour recertification, 80% passing score, 3-year renewal, and minimum insurance of $100k/$300k/$50k (WAC 468-38-100(4), (16)(a)-(c)).
