Hammer lane

The far-left / passing lane on a highway.

The 'hammer lane' is the leftmost lane — the fast or passing lane ('hammer down' means put your foot down and go). The opposite is the 'granny lane,' the right-hand slow lane. Oversize loads almost always run the granny lane and use escorts to manage traffic trying to get around them.
