Lead car (front pilot)

The pilot car that travels ahead of the load.

The lead car runs in front of the oversize load. It scouts the road ahead for low bridges, tight turns, construction, and oncoming wide vehicles, and warns the truck driver before the load reaches a hazard. On wide loads the lead car often holds the oncoming lane through narrow spots. Most states require a front escort first as width increases.
