Step deck (drop deck)

A flatbed with a lower rear deck so taller loads stay under height limits.

A step deck — also called a drop deck or single drop — is a flatbed with two deck levels: a short upper deck over the gooseneck and a longer lower deck behind it. The lower deck means a load can be taller than on a standard flatbed before it goes over-height, which keeps more freight legal without a permit.
