Bear (Smokey)

CB slang for police — a state trooper or highway patrol officer.

A 'bear' or 'Smokey' (after Smokey Bear's hat, like a trooper's) is a police officer. Variations: a 'county mounty' is a sheriff's deputy, a 'local yokel' is city police, a 'plain wrapper' is an unmarked car, and a 'bear in the air' is police aircraft running speed. Pilots and drivers call out bears so everyone tightens up.
